The Challenge
Hunger is one of the most direct and underappreciated barriers to education in Zambia. When a child arrives at school without having eaten — a reality for many children in food-insecure households — their ability to concentrate, participate, and learn is severely compromised. In peak hunger periods, many children don't come to school at all.
The Nourish to Flourish Program
Zango Foundation's Nourish to Flourish feeding program provides nutritious, fortified porridge to over 400 children three times a week at partner schools. The program is designed to fill the nutritional gap during school hours, ensuring that children who might otherwise go hungry are sustained and energised throughout the day.
The program operates in partnership with local school administrations and community volunteers. Produce from the Gaula Garden at Namabuyu Community School — part of Zango's Green Sprout environmental program — contributes to the feeding initiative, creating a sustainable, locally-sourced nutrition loop.
What the Data Shows
- 400+ children fed nutritious porridge three times per week
- Participating schools have reported measurable improvements in daily attendance
- Teachers report improved concentration and participation among program beneficiaries
- The Gaula Garden now contributes fresh produce to the program, reducing dependence on external food donations
Sustaining the Program
The Nourish to Flourish program depends on continued funding support to maintain its reach. We are actively seeking donors and corporate sponsors to help us sustain and expand the program to more schools. A contribution of any size makes a direct difference to a child's day.
